World premiere with Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in October 2020

World premiere with Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in October 2020As we all know, it's been a very strange year 2020. However, I think we must believe in good things and one of them will happen later this month. I am very happy to announce that a highly talented composer and a great friend of mine Mikko Pellinen has composed a piece for chamber orchestra and piano. The Premier will take place in Kokkola on Oct 23rd, 2020 at 19:00 and it is an honor to be the soloist with my dream orchestra, The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra.
The evening will also be very special when we continue with amazing Jukka Perko and play some music of Charlie Parker. There will be only limited amount of tickets on sale for this specieal concert so be quick if you want to get yours!,-pellinen,-parker/

Welcome 2020!

Welcome 2020!It's already February and I noticed that I haven't updated my pages for a while. However, I am very happy to announce a couple of things for this spring. In March I have a solo piano concert at Koko Jazz Club in Helsinki, where we celebrate the "new heart of the club" a Steinway grand piano. We will release our debut album with Estonian singer Susanna Aleksandra in Japan in March and will be touring in China and Japan in May. With my piano trio we will do our debut tour in the U.S. in June. The concerts will be at the Kennedy Center Washington D.C., Rochester International Jazz Festival and Scandinavia House in New York. I am really excited about the upcoming tours!

Solo concert in Steinway Piano Gallery Helsinki

Solo concert in Steinway Piano Gallery HelsinkiI feel really happy after my first solo concert in the Steinway Piano Gallery Helsinki. It was a big challenge for me in many ways, but also very interesting and rewarding. Solo concerts are not everyday life for most of us as jazz pianists, but I hope I can do more of those in the near future. Big thanks for the Steinway faculty for the arrangements and thanks for the great audience for coming to listen to my music. I hope you all liked it!

Hymyilevä mies movie won the first prize Prix Un Certain Regard, Festival de Cannes 2016

Hymyilevä mies movie won the first prize Prix Un Certain Regard, Festival de Cannes 2016I´m very proud and happy to be part of the movie "The Happiest Day In The Life Of Olli Mäki". I composed and performed a piano track for the movie. We recorded the music at my studio apartment in the spring and it was one of the most interesting things I have done. Juho Kuosmanen is the first Finnish director who has won Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie will be shown all over the world and its premier was September 2. It has already received excellent reviews and the future looks very bright for the debutant Kuosmanen.

Olli Mäki had a chance of a lifetime. He was the first ever Finn to fight for the world championship in feather weight boxing, but lost the match humiliatingly in the second round by a knock out in front of a packed stadium. He says it was the best day of his life.

”Latest masterpiece from the fast rising Nordic Star.”

— Jazz Critiques Magazine (March 2016)

”This trio´s real thrill lies in its unique balance and those breathtaking moments in their nuanced playing.”

— Toshiaki Uemura, CD Journal (February 2016)

”Every tune sounds excellent!”

— Takashi Kubota, Jazz Japan (February 2016)

”Haavisto’s playing resembles the style of Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. The mastering of Northern Europe coolness and catchy melodies is Haavisto’s strong point.”

— Jazz Life, Japan: Micro to Macro

”This debut set is a delight from start to finish.”

— Tim Stenhouse, ukvibe 4/5 (Micro to Macro)

”Hämmentävän jäntevältä kuulostava kokonaisuus pulppuilee tavalla, joka imaisee vastaanottajan mukaansa. Harmonisessa ympäristössä täyteläinen bassottelu, soljuvat pianovaeltelut sekä irtonainen rytmitys poikivat hurmaavan euforian.”

— Juha Seitz, Ilkka/Pohjalainen 5/5 (oku)

”Pianotrion taikaa korkeimmalla tasolla.

— Pentti Ronkainen, Keskisuomalainen/Savon Sanomat 5/5 (oku)

— Jan-Erik Holmberg, HBL (oku)

”Hiljaisuus ja tilantuntu kasvoivat sen myötä osaksi yhtyeen ulosantia – herkkyys kuunnella kanssasoittajia toi lisäarvoa lähestymistapaan. Upea esitys!”

— Matti Komulainen, Turun Sanomat (oku levynjulkaisukonsertti)

“Joonas Haavisto liittyy luontevasti pohjoismaisen jazzpianon perinteeseen kirkkaan selkeällä ja linjakkaalla soitollaan. Albumista syntyy kuulas, viileää kauneutta henkivä kokonaisuus.”

— Jukka piiroinen, Valon kuvia blogi (oku)

”Actually, this really was the favourite album of the day.”

”According to the feedback from our listeners, the status of this recording has become a hit album.”

— Swing Journal, Japan, Blue Waters album review, May 2010

The whole review in Finnish, click here.

”Joonas is an exceptional performing pianist to be included among the world´s finest. Additionally, he is a fine composer and arranger.”

— Ron Miller

— Helsingin Sanomat, Finland, Harri Uusitorppa, Dec 2009

— Soundi, Finland, Pauli Kallio, Nov 2009

The whole review in Finnish, click here.

”Pianisti Joonas Haaviston (s.1982) trion soitossa kuuluu pianotrioperinne hienolla tavalla.

Kolmikon tiukkaa yhteissoittoa kelpaa kuunnella.”

— Salon Seudun Sanomat, Finland, Oct 2009

Alkupuolella kuultu Lost Life rakentui yksinkertaisen ostinaton varaan ja toi kovasti mieleen Chick Corean Children´s songs –pianosarjan pienoiskuvat. Home ja Overtime puolestaan olivat samasta sävelpuusta veistettyjä – hyvin soivaa, kuvailevaa ja herkkiäkin sävyjä etsivää musiikkia”

— Hämeen Sanomat, Finland, Solo piano concert review Jul 2007

“Joonas Haavisto: Blue Waters.

— Satakunnan Kansa, Finland, Ilari Tapio, Oct 2009

”Kolmenkympin rajapyykkiä lähestyvä Joonas Haavisto on kiivennyt tasaisen varmalla vauhdilla Suomijazzin kärkipianistien joukkoon.

— Suomijazz, Finland, Pentti Ronkainen, Jan 2010
